Listen

Listen

When you despair
sit for awhile
where it is quiet.
Don't hang
your head so low.
Stop your mind
from digging a hole.

Listen to the sounds
of the city.
Hear the song
of humanity.
It has a beauty
all its own.
Listen to the wind
in the trees.
Hear the melodies
of nature.
They sing a grand
and ancient song.

Look around,
there is a panorama
of living things
all around you
forever playing out
the great drama of life.
The Earth and all
her creatures
together have
a luminescent lullaby
of their own.
As you pity the myriad
of small creatures
because you believe
they cannot think,
they pity mankind
because so few
among us know
how to listen.
